In 868 Flóki sailed from Norway in search of land that Garðar Svavarson had found in the north. His family accompanied him, along with three men, Þórólf, Herjólf and Faxi. On his way to Iceland, he stopped at the Shetland Islands and the Faroe Islands.
He had three ravens with him and let them show him the way to Iceland. He released the first raven that flew back to the Faroe Islands. The next one flew straight into the air and back again. The third one flew forward by the pole, and then Flóki knew that the ship was close to land, which was how he reached Iceland. Because of this, he was nicknamed Hrafna-Flóki (Raven-Flóki).
When Hrafna-Flóki and his entourage returned to Norway, people asked about the newly found land, which he said was of little value. Still, Herjólfur considered the soil both good and bad.
Herjólfur then returned to Iceland, found the Vestmannaeyjar, and settled there with his family. When Hrafna-Flóki moved back to Iceland, he regularly visited his friend Herjólf. They sat together late into the night, drinking Herjólf’s famous ale and reminiscing about old battles.
